Healthline Aerosol Medicine Introduces
The Medicator® High-Efficiency, Environmentally-Protective
Aerosol Drug Delivery System

BALDWIN PARK , CA – May 8, 2003.  Healthline Aerosol Medicine, a newly formed division of Healthline Medical, Inc., of Baldwin Park, California, has introduced a new product line, called the Medicator® Aerosol Maximizer, a high-efficiency and environmentally-protective aerosol drug delivery system for respiratory therapy, systemic drug delivery and new drug research applications.

Healthline developed the patented nebulizer-based aerosol delivery system as a result of 30 years of research and innovation in radioactive gas and particle delivery for diagnostic lung imaging.  Suitable for both adults and children, the Medicator® system is capable of increasing aerosol drug delivery to the patient by a factor of 2 to 3 times for nearly any available pneumatic medication nebulizer while simultaneously reducing drug waste and environmental contamination by wasted drug.  The Medicator® Plus version of the product offers the additional advantage of a filtered exhalation port, providing therapists complete security from patient-exhaled aerosols.

“The Medicator® represents a quantum leap beyond the standard method of aerosol drug delivery,” said Michael McPeck, RRT, director of Healthline Aerosol Medicine.  “The Medicator® does for the nebulizer what the spacer did for the metered-dose inhaler,” McPeck added.  “The significant increase in efficiency imparted by the Medicator® is best exploited in hospitals by way of respiratory therapy protocols that allow reduction of treatment time by 50% or more from that of a standard nebulizer ‘tee’ configuration.  But it can also be used to improve and guarantee proper drug delivery for ‘exotic’ aerosols such as antibiotics and opioids plus developmental drugs like chemotherapy and vasodilators.”

This unique technology offers a multitude of benefits to hospitals and their stressed out respiratory therapists:  higher aerosol delivery efficiency translates into reduction of treatment time which helps to reduce concurrent therapy (recently banned by CMS).  Because labor costs are the most expensive part of therapeutic aerosol delivery procedures in hospitals, reducing the treatment time by half or more can significantly reduce the total cost of therapy and save money or allow better deployment of the available labor force.  “And what the respiratory therapists will enjoy,” said McPeck, “is the peace of mind that comes with using a system that eliminates their occupational exposure to medicated aerosols and possibly patient-exhaled droplets.”

“Additionally, because aerosol that is generated during patient exhalation is captured in its holding chamber, and inhaled by the patient on the subsequent breath, the Medicator® delivers a reliable, repeatable, quantifiable amount of drug, offering further value to medical researchers who are using the aerosol route for pulmonary, or even systemic delivery, with expensive drugs.”

In concert with the introduction of its Medicator® product line, Healthline Aerosol Medicine has launched an informational website for respiratory care practitioners and pulmonologists.  The site provides not only product information, but also a plethora of links, presentations, downloads, news, events, and other resources to those with interest in aerosols in medicine.  The web site address (URL) is www.aerosol-medicine.com.
